With Jab Tak Hai Jaan, a love triangle starring Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma & Shahrukh Khan, Bollywood’s cute dimpled lover boy Shahrukh Khan returns to silver screen after 4 years. Shahrukh Khan last played a lover boy in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi , Yash Raj film, opposite Anushka Sharma which also happened to be bubbly Anushka Sharma’s debut film.

Under the capable direction of Senior Mr. Yash Chopra and Chopra Junior – Aditya Chopra, lover boy Shahrukh Khan has delivered several blockbusters like Darr, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Veer-Zaara…lets take a stroll through few famous lover boy avataars of King Khan or King of  Romance or Badshah Khan aka Shahrukh Khan hits.

 

Deewana

Release date: 25 June 1992

Seen earlier in TV serials like Circus, Fauji, etc, Shahrukh Khan made his Bollywood debut with 1992 hit movie Deewana – staring Rishi Kapoor, Shahrukh Khan and the late Divya Bharti. Directed by Raj Kanwar and co-produced by Guddu Dhanoa and Lalit Kapoor, Shahrukh Khan made his first silver screen appearence ridding a bike and singing ‘Koi na koi chahiye…’ The song became an instant hit.

The Boxoffice collections of the movie were Rs 14 Crore therefore was declared a hit. Though, the main actor in Deewana was Rishi Kapoor but SRK made his presence felt in the movie. No one could prophecy an evergreen lover boy in SRK then.

Baazigar

Release date: 12 November 1993

Inspired by the 1953 novel written by Ira Levin A Kiss Before Dying (The novel has been adapted twice in Hollywood films.), Baazigar proved to be a benchmark in Shahrukh Khan’s career.

Directed by Abbas-Mustan, produced by Ganesh Jain, SRK was paired opposite Kajol for the first time. Gorgeous Shilpa Shetty’s career was also launched with Baazigar. Though a newbie in Bollywood then Shahrukh Khan took the risk of doing a negative role. The movie took SRK’s career to new heights and established him as an acclaimed actor.

Box office collections of Baazigar movie were Rs 14 crore (US$2.53 million). One more SRK hit!

 

Darr

Release date: 24 December 1993

Budget Rs 1.5 crore (US$271,500)

Darr staring Sunny Deol, Juhi Chawla & Shahrukh Khan was directed & produced by Yash Chopra and Written by Honey Irani & Javed Siddiqui. Darr was Shahrukh Khan’s first venture with accomplished director Yash Chopra and Yash Raj Films, one of Bollywood’s biggest production houses. In Darr Shahrukh Khan played a crazy lover and was his second film with grey shades in just one and a half month.

Very few actors dare to take such risks that too in the begining of their acting career. Shahrukh Khan’s stammering ‘Kkkkirannnn’ became talk of town and stole the lime light. Darr was declared ‘Super Hit’ by Box Office India and its Box Office collections were 19.25 crore (US$3.48 million). List of SRK hits was growing.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Release date: 20 October 1995

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge or DDLJ for short, written by Aditya Chopra was a romantic family entertainer. DDLJ marked the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra (Yash Chopra’s son), had an impressive star cast of Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Ambrish Puri, Farida Jalal & others.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was picturized in exotic locations of India, London, and Switzerland. Audience loved everything about the movie (movie story, music, SRK Kajol jodi, dialogues, Raj, etc) and it went on to become a super duper hit. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge movie holds several records in its name and its Box Office collections were astonishing Rs 106 crore (US$19.19 million) in India and Rs 15 crore (US$2.72 million) overseas. There was no turning back for King of Romance, this SRK movie had set the cash registers ringing!

Dil To Pagal Hai – “Someone somewhere is made for you…”

Release date: October 31 1997

Dil To Pagal Hai, directed by Yash Chopra and produced by Yash Chopra & Aditya Chopra, had Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor in the lead roles, with Akshay Kumar in a guest appearance.

Dil To Pagal Hai, a musical love triangle was the first Bollywood movie to be shot in Baden-Baden, Germany, and in Europa theme Park. Both the movie & its music went on to be a rage and rocked at major award functions. The movie was declared super hit at Box Office and its Box office collections were stunning Rs 58 crore (US$10.5 million). List of SRK hits adds one new member!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Release date: 16 October 1998

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol in the lead roles, was written & directed by debuting super talented director Karan Johar and was produced under Dharma Productions banner by his father Yash Johar. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai introduced a new face, Rani Mukherjee in Bollywood.

Audience witnessed crackling chemistry between Shahrukh & Kajol for the fourth time. Power packed performances by SRK, Kajol & others made Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Indian youth icon and ofcource an all-time blockbuster too. Gross Box Office collections of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai then were Rs 103 crore (US$18.64 million). One more blockbuster in Shahrukh Khan’s name.

Mohabbatein

Release date: 27 October 2000

Budget Rs 18.1 crore (US$3.28 million)

Mohabbatein yet another money minting movie of lover boy Shahrukh Khan, was his second project with director Aditya Chopra post DDLJ. This musical enchanting Hindi film had an impressive line up of stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai along with six fresh faces.

Mohabbatein movie was filmed at Oxford, England and Longleat. The film triumphed both critically and commercially. It is to be noted in Mohabbatein for the first time that two stalwarts Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan shared the screen space. Needless to say like all other Shahrukh Khan films Mohabbatein too rocked at major awards functions. Its box office collections were Rs 74.11 crore (US$13.41 million). Shahrukh movies are talk of town!

 

Chalte Chalte

Release date: June 13, 2003

Budget Rs 12 crore (US$2.17 million)

 

Chalte Chalte a light hearted movie was produced by Dreamz Unlimited and directed & co-written by Aziz Mirza. Post three consecutive disasters of Dreamz Unlimited, this Shahrukh Khan & Rani Mukherji starrer proved to be a marginal hit at the Box Office.

However, the movie was a sensation in the overseas market. Box office collections of Chalte Chalte were Rs 16 crores in the domestic market and Rs 12 Crores abroad i.e. total US$4.87 million.

Veer-Zaara

Release date: November 12, 2004

Budget INR25 crore (US$4.53 million)

Veer-Zaara, directed by vetran director Mr. Yash Chopra and jointly produced by Aditya (also dialogue writer of the movie) & Yash Chopra had Shahrukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji in the lead roles.

Shahrukh Khan played an Indian Air Force pilot, Squadron Leader Veer Pratap Singh in this Yash Chopra’s symphonic love saga. Veer-Zaara was super hit both in India as well as abroad and was also screened at the 55th Berlin Film Festival. SRK’s acting finesse were appreciated by all & sundry. Worldwide gross Box office collections of Veer Zaara were Rs 940 million.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Release date: 12 December 2008

Budget Rs 20 crore (US$3.62 million)

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi or RNBDJ, a romantic comedy film written & directed by Aditya Chopra was produced under the banner of Yash Raj Films (popularly known as YRF). Shahrukh Khan essayed a non glamorous character of Surinder Sahni, working for Punjab Power, who with a twist of fate gets to marry a delightful, exuburent Taani (Anushka Sharma). To impress her & woo his lady love with the help of his friend Surinder transforms to filmi “Raj”.

Like all other Shahrukh Khan films RNBDJ too went on to be a blockbuster and its Box office collections were Rs 158 crore (US$28.6 million). Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi sweeped all major awards that year. Another proud member in the family of SRK hits!
