Another year comes and goes… As we turn another leaf in our lives, lets go back in time and recall all the entertaining moments.
2010′s Best TV Hosts
Amitabh Bachchan: Like vintage wine, some people just get better with age. Though spread over just 2 months, Kaun Banega Crorepati did give India a new crorepati. What remains in memory is the witty, empathy, the cajoling, the encouragement… of a man who had become friendly neighourhood kuber for the contestants
Karan Johar: His chat show, loaded with irreverent humour, Koffee With Karan season 3, got off to a controversial start with actresses duo Deepika and Sonam having a good laugh at the cost of actor Ranbir. Papa Rishi Kapoor was mad at the girl… Last heard, Karan had won over uncle Rishi.
Salman Khan: As the host of Big Boss, he has definitely endeared himself to TV viewers. Salman is, in fact, the flavour of the season giving a super hit Dabangg and then keeping the TRPs afloat with Big Boss.
Madhuri Dixit: While the actor is not really hosting a show, her presence as a judge in a dance show has created quite a buzz. The show is currently on…
Akshay Kumar: If there’s one actor who seriously needs re-invention, then its Akshay Kumar. With dud after dud (read Chandni Chowk to China, Khatta Mittha and now Tees Maar Khan), Kumar did in fact dabble with TV with MasterChef India. But the TV ratings don’t seem to have been very impressive.
2010′s Happening Star
Rajinikanth: At 60, he reigns supreme down south. But with Robot, the super duper Tamil language thriller with Rajini playing a Robot, the king of south was suddenly everywhere with halls going houseful even in places like Faridabad. Now, the north Indian isn’t generally enamoured with the dark-skinned heroes. But Rajini proved the critics wrong.
Salman Khan: The Dabangg star clearly captivated the collective imagination of the nation. The biggest hit of the season brought Sallu back into the reckoning and that too with a bang.
Aamir Khan: Wow, this man’s USP is that he has no USP. No charisma, no great charm, no superhuman aura…nothing. And there in lies his strength. 3 Idiots proved just that. A great script, a great story (ok, may be burrowed), a great director and great music assured that 45 year Aamir Khan could easily carry off the role of a 19 year old!
2010′s Favourite Song
Munni Badnaam: She was a rage the country hadn’t known since the days of Chamma Chamma. The original item girl was back with a bang.
Sheila Ki Jawani: Katrina Kaif scorched the silver screen with her jawani….no one has swayed her hip the way Kat babe’s done since the times of Madhuri and Helen.
Aal Izzz Well: This Swadanand Kirkire written song caught the spirit of the nation just too well. Be it “I care a damn for worries in life” attitude, the song was just right for a nation like India with a huge young population.
Ibn-e-Batuta: Gulzar was at his best. Here’s a man who have always shown that being classy and bit a hit with masses isn’t impossible.
2010′s Best Shaadi
Sania Mirza – Shoiab Mallik: This pair was a shocker! When Sania announced her engagement on her twitter, it created a mini earthquake in the subcontinent. Headlines screamed: Couldn’t she find a boy in India? Then, when the marriage closed in, it was mired in yet another controversy… Shoiab was previously married and but divorced and the lady in question staked claimed over her ‘husband’…. Uff, what drama!
Mahendra S Dhoni – Sakshi Rawat: One of the most wanted “bachelors” of the country decided to go down the aisle this year. And it was a super hush hush affair. Good thing is he got himself a real pretty miss!
Vivek Oberoi– Priyanka Alva: The Aishwarya phase is now a closed chapter in Vivek Oberoi’s life as he married Bangalore girl, Priyanka Alva. Both the Vivek and bride looked radiant on their big day.
Manisha Koirala – Samrat Dahal: The sensitive actress of Dil Se fame finally said “I Do” with her Nepali suitor, Samrat Dahal in Kathmandu in a traditional wedding.
2010′s TV Show
Kaun Banega Crorepati: It’s quite a thing that the 2 of 3 times the programme produced a 1 crore winner (non celebrity), it had Amitabh Bachchan as the host. His signature phrases “Computer ji” and “Lock Kiya Jaye” are now part of collective Indian consciousness. With KBC 3 too, Amitabh Bachchan just why he is so good.
Big Boss: This reality show, for whatever its worth, is quite popular with Indian audience. People bitch, fight, argue, cry, laugh…even marry in full public view. While the contestants have always had a steady following, the host of the show has always been a weak link. But all that changed with the entry of Salman Khan.
Jhalak Dikhla Jaa: Okay, this dance show is into its season 4 but the new bit this season is that it has Madhuri Dixit as one of the judges. Enough reason for the nation to go dhak dhak?
2010′s Best Film
3 Idiots: By far the best film of 2010. Be it in its direction, the concept, the story, the performances, its music… it scored on all counts.
Robot: Cinematically speaking, it was nothing outstanding but for the sheer persona of Rajinikanth.
Dabangg: Salman Khan proved that up north, he is the undisputed king of buffoonery and quite ‘fearless’ in acknowledging that too!
Golmaal 3: Ajay Devgan is the quiet entry here… consistently over a period he has shown his familiarity with different genres…most recent being comedy.
2010′s Best Cricketer
Sachin Tendulkar: They don’t make men like him any more. Sachin Tendulkar’s love for runs continues unabated. Ducking age, the new ‘little wonder’ went on to score 200 runs in second ODI against South Africa in Gwalior in Feb this year. The untiring sportsman went on push records further by scoring hi 50th Test ton again against South Africa at the SuperSport Park, Centurion this December.
VVS Laxman: Though he didn’t score any centuries, VVS Laxman’s match-winning knocks in three crucial Tests sealed his status for India. He was part of three match-winning partnerships (81-run partnership for the ninth wicket between VVS Laxman and Ishant Sharma at Mohali agianst Aus; His 96 at Durban against SA in the recently concluded Test that India won).
The 163 run partnership for the seventh wicket between VVS Laxman and Harbhajan is the best ever seventh wicket stand for India against New Zealand at Ahmedabad further showed his match-winning ways.
Gautam Gambhir: Delhi batsman too had a great run in 2010. Not only did he score a lot of runs, he captioned India in the ODI series against New Zealand that the host won 5-0. Of special mention where his contribution with the bat having scored 2 consecutive tons in the 2nd (138) and 3rd (126) ODIs.
Virendar Sehwag: Viru scored lot runs in 2010, becoming the second highest run-getter in Tests with an aggregate of 1422 runs, second only to Sachin’s 1562 runs this year.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni: Though the Indian caption didn’t excel with his bat or in his wicket-keeping skills, the year was nonetheless special as he under his captaincy India won most of her matches (Asia Cup, Australia series 2-0, New Zealand series 1-0)
Harbhajan Singh: The Turbinator was two spectacular with the bat scoring consecutive Test tons against New Zealand.
Saina Nehwal: The golden girl of badminton dominated the scene with wins in CWG games (gold), gold at Asian Satellite Badminton Tournament seeking a sweet revenge over her Asian Games defeating Hong Kong player and rising to be number 2 ranked in the world.
Athletes & Shooters: Indian women’s 4X400m relay quartet (Ashwini, Mandeep Kaur, Manjeet Kaur, & Sini Jose) struck gold not once but twice first at CWG and then at Guangzhou.
Shooters Gagan Narang (4 Golds in CWG), Abhinav Bindra (1 Gold, 1 Silver) and many more who helped India scale to the second position in the final medals’ tally.
Best Small Film
Peepli Live: A small delight that did more for the poor of India than any amount of lecture by motor mouth Arundhati Roy. The faceless farmer now had a face…
Tere Bin Laden: Here was film that mocked everything about “War on Terror” and “Islamic Terror”… be it the US or Pakistan. And best bit was it was by Indian film maker.
Ishqiya: Small-town India got a face. Set in the dusty plains of UP, this story of two thieves and their lady love that plays itself out in Gorakhpur.
Band Baaja Baraat: Oye hoy! Chotta packet ka zor daar dhamaka! This comparative low star-quotient was hugely feted by the audience.
Best Sporting Event
CWG: First came the news of fraud. Then came the news of shoddy construction. Then, came the complaints that work wouldn’t be complete before the due date. Then, came stories of security lapses… the nation held its head high with a spectacular opening ceremony despite Commonwealth Games and its infamous Suresh Kalmadi disasters. The sport persons more than made up for the loss of face with a medal haul that was only behind Australia.
ASIAN GAMES 2010: The Asian Games in Guangzhou, China though dominated by China by a long long margin, India’s outing too was quite good. Given the corruption taints and mismanagement of Indian sports, the overall standing of sixth with 14 Gold medals. It was our utter bad luck that we couldn’t go past Kazakhstan (18) and Iran (20) ahead of us.
2010’s Best Jokes:
Rajinikanth: Like everything Rajinikanth, the southern star was a toast of the nation in the department of jokes too. Sample some:
* Rajinikanth doesn’t do push-ups; he pushes the earth down
Salman Khan: The Dabangg star too had his share of jokes in his name.
* Why do you think Salman’s mad these days?
Kyunki uski bhabhi badnaam ho gayi aur GF jawaan ho gayi
2010’s Year of Scams
2G Scam: A Raja and UPA II came in for some bashing when the 2G scam, came to the fore. The illegal distribution of spectrums and the ensuing monetary irregularities remains the biggest scam in the country’s history.
Some salient points of the scam:
* 2G licenses issued to private telecom players at throwaway prices in 2008
* CAG: Spectrum scam has cost the government Rs. 1.76 lakh crore
* CAG: Rules and procedures flouted while issuing licenses
CWG: Along with 2G scam, this is the next big storm to hit UPA II. The chief concern was the illegitimate wealth created through over-reporting of games costs.
Estimated scam worth: Rs 10,000-70,000 Crore
Adarsh Scam: The Kargil housing scam was another scam to hit UPA II.
2010 Most Twitter Friendly Indian Celebs
Priyanka Chopra: Piggy Chops sat on top of heap with maximum tweets. Next came Shah Rukh Khan followed by Salman Khan. Then came Amitabh Bachchan and in the fifth position stood Deepika Padukone.
